I referred in an earlier post to Irving Howe's essay "New Styles in 'Leftism'". This piece is included in a new collection of essays celebrating fifty years of the American democratic socialist journal Dissent, since its inception home to an important strain of liberal, anti-totalitarian thinking on the left. Its luminaries include not only the estimable Howe himself, but also Michael Walzer, Michael Harrington, Marshall Berman and Lewis Coser.
